It has been my experience that working with the family system rather than specific children or individuals is more effective in the long run in moving families toward more effective relationships and overall well being. This can be a tough decision and a big investment in your family!

I have received advanced training from the Family Trauma Institute. Family therapy can feel overwhelming but this evidence-based family systems model of therapy provides a structured roadmap for identifying the top family stressors and structuring interventions that allow the entire family and their support network to feel empowered.

There is no magic wand and it does take the entire family actively working together to come up with solutions that make a difference and provide a legacy for future generations!

Family secrets create secrecy, silence, and judgement and shining a light in those dark corners does take courage! Remember “monsters only survive in the darkness”!

Figley and Kiser (2013) have found four primary ways in which family systems can be traumatized:

  • All members of the family were directly affected by a traumatic event/s such as natural disasters, auto accidents, or an unexpected death of a loved one.
  • Other family members are traumatized vicariously when they learn another family member has experienced an emotional traumatic event.
  • Other family members are traumatized through exposure to the experience of the traumatized member.
  • Family members are traumatized by other family members such as in cases of abuse or divorce.

The FST Model of treatment has five phases and is meant to provide for an integration between a family systems model and a more traditional trauma treatment methods.

Depending on your goals and interests and the assessment I may discuss integrating Expressive Arts into our sessions. This may involve utilizing one of the following expressive arts experiences: music, art, movement, music, or the written word. I find that there are individuals who struggle at times significantly expressing themselves verbally and may find it easier to express feelings or concerns through a creative outlet.  Of course, this would be something that we would discuss and work collaboratively to incorporate. If this is something you are interested in please feel free to talk with me about this during a free consult call or once we have met in person
